- Today the iconic Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque is probably among the most famous symbols of Mostar. It`s the second largest mosque in Mostar, situated on the left bank of the Neretva river, just about 150 meters north of the Old Bridge.
Its dome is a symbolic representation of the vault of heaven. The interior decoration of a dome often emphasizes this symbolism, using intricate geometric, stellate, or vegetal motifs to create breathtaking patterns meant to awe and inspire.
- Standing on the right bank of the Neretva River, about 100 meters from the iconic Old Bridge, is the Hadži-Kurt Mosque, locally called TabaÄica. It was built between the 16th and 17th century, under the sponsorship of Hadzi-Kurt, one of the members of the respected Kurt family which was one of the oldest families from Mostar. Its dome is also decorated with intricate geometric and vegetal motifs.
Today this is the only mosque where both mahfils (the gallery in mosque where women would say prayers) are preserved, the one inside and the one outside the mosque.
