The most beautiful domes in Mostar

All around the world for centuries beautiful architecture has inspired writers, poets and artists for more amazing work and creations.

The domes have always been symbols of great structures and architectural wonders. You can see them almost at all significant attractions in the world. Domes usually are form roofs or ceilings and they are made of different materials.

1. The Karađoz Bey Mosque is the most important monumental work of Islamic sacred architecture from the 16th century in the region of Herzegovina.

It was built in1557.  and from the inscriptions on the entrance of the mosque, we can see that it was built by Mehmed Bey Karagöz (Mehmed-beg Karađoz), the brother of Ottoman vizier Rüstem Pasha.

The magnificent dome above the mosque has the dimensions of 13,4 x 14,4m. The statuesque minaret is harmoniously decorated with stalactites under the gallery.

2. Today the iconic Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque is probably among the most famous symbols of Mostar. It`s the second largest mosque in Mostar, situated on the left bank of the Neretva river, just about 150 meters north of the Old Bridge.

Its dome is a symbolic representation of the vault of heaven. The interior decoration of a dome often emphasizes this symbolism, using intricate geometric, stellate, or vegetal motifs to create breathtaking patterns meant to awe and inspire.

3. Standing on the right bank of the Neretva River, about 100 meters from the iconic Old Bridge, is the Hadži-Kurt Mosque, locally called Tabačica. It was built between the 16th and 17th century, under the sponsorship of Hadzi-Kurt, one of the members of the respected Kurt family which was one of the oldest families from Mostar. Its dome is also decorated with intricate geometric and vegetal motifs.

Today this is the only mosque where both mahfils (the gallery in mosque where women would say prayers) are preserved, the one inside and the one outside the mosque.
