5 alternative ways to have fun in Mostar

Mostar is a city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, straddling the Neretva River. It’s known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstructed medieval arched bridge. The nearby alleys are full of shops and market stalls, and the Old Bridge Museum explores the bridge’s long history.

This city also has lots of activities for those who enjoy outdoor activities and sports.

1. Hiking around Mostar

This country has wonderful mountains, its geographical position delivers particular landscapes from the north (with continental climate) to the south (with Mediterranean climate). Hikers love to visit locations around Mostar such as the Prenj, Čvrsnica and Velež.

2. Rafting on Neretva river

Rafting is probably among the world`s most popular outdoor activities. On its way to the Adriatic sea, Neretva flows through some of the most beautiful places in Herzegovina: Konjic, Jablanica, Mostar, Čapljina and Počitelj.

Rafting on Neretva river is a great experience for all lovers of outdoor water sports. There are packages which offer rafting experience from Konjic to Mostar all along the waters of Neretva. 3. Paragliding

Have you ever watched the paragliders in the air and thought about joining them?

The area of Mostar has many locations perfect for this adventurous activity. There is a paragliding school which organizes take offs from the top of Planinica, where the maximum height above the Mostar is 500 meters and even over 1000 meters  can be achieved only if favorable weather conditions. The flight takes a minimum of 20 minutes we land on Kop Vihovici or Sjeverni logor.

4. Diving in Neretva

The Neretva river is 225 km long, for the most part runs through Bosnia and Herzegovina (203 km), and before entering the Adriatic Sea, it also goes through Croatia (22 km).

Turquoise waters of the Neretva hide many underground caves, and strong underwater currents. There is so much of still unexplored under water, that even the most experienced and knowledgeable locals sometimes do not dare to dive.

All the diving activities have to be guided by experienced tour guides and divers who spent many years in and around Neretva river.

5. Jumping off Old Bridge

As we have stated before, the local tradition of jumping off the Old Bridge in Mostar dates back 450 years. It is traditional for the young men of the town to leap from the bridge into the Neretva. The practice dates back to the time the bridge was built, but the first recorded instance of someone diving off the bridge is from 1664. In 1968 a formal diving competition was inaugurated and held every summer.

Today tourists are not advised to jump off this bridge. Only those who have years of training are advised to first spend weeks training with local Divers club before even trying to jump into the Neretva river.
