Here are 8 reasons why you should visit Bosnia and Herzegovina:
- Watch bridge-jumping Festival in Mostar
Old Bridge jumping traditional annual competition in diving organized every year in mid-summer (end of July). It is traditional for the young men of the town to leap from the bridge into the Neretva. The practice dates back to the time the bridge was built, but the first recorded instance of someone diving off the bridge is from 1664. Non-professionals can also try it for themselves, paying €25 for advice and a practice jump from a lower platform on the river bank. But stay safe and be warned: travellers have died in their attempts.
- It`s cheap and very accessible to tourist.
Tourists can easily arrive here. Just two and half hours away by plane from London. Sarajevo is one of Europe’s cheapest capitals, and outside of the city the prices fall even lower. In Mostar, you can expect to eat out for as little as 3-5 Bosnian Marks (less than £1.50).
- Eat healthy and organic food everywhere you go
Food in Bosnia and Herzegovina is almost entirely organic. The traditional cuisine is a mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Balkan flavours. All of you foodies and meat lovers will enjoy this country. One of the most popular meals are ćevapi (small meat rolls) in somun with onions and ajvar.
- Enjoy variety of activities, from hiking to rafting
There are few places in the world where you can enjoy hiking, beautiful countryside, rafting and swimming in wild waterfalls, and skiing all within one country – but adventure-lovers will find plenty to do in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perućica is one of Europe’s last genuinely primeval native forests with spruce, fir and beech trees sometimes exceeding 50m high, surrounding a 70m waterfall. But if getting on the slopes is your thing, you can go skiing in Blidinje or Bjelašnica.
- Enjoy architecture
This country`s architectural heritage comes from the years under Ottoman empire and later being under Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In Mostar and Sarajevo, the old city parts are full of old clock towers, fortresses and stone buildings alongside Moorish muqarnas (ornamental vaulting), courtyards and arches.
- Discover poetic castles
In the 15th century the Ottomans arrived and built castles, as did the Austro-Hungarians later on. For this reason, this country is perfect for castle-lovers and historians. Go explore Jajce castle, Tešanj Castle or the Stjepan Grad fortress above Blagaj.
- Visit “The World’s Biggest Pyramidâ€
Ok the debate is still going on, is the Visoko’s 250m-high VisoÄica Hill the World’s Greatest Pyramid? An American-Bosnian researcher Semir Osmanagic claims it was built approximately 12,000 years ago by a long-disappeared superculture. Scientific investigations of the site show there is, in fact, no pyramid, but it’s still a fascinating to see this natural geological formation.
- Discover rapid rivers and waterfalls
If getting a perfect Instagram picture is your thing, then you’ll want to visit Kravice waterfalls and Una River. Kravice waterfall has the height of 25 metres. Locals advise taking a trip to Kostelski Buk, a natural waterfall that can be admired with a glass of wine from one of the area’s brilliant riverside restaurants.
